A singer from Turkmenistan?

Yesterday's visit by a Government jet from Turkmenistan was the latest in a series of visits from that country. Maybe the presidents wanted to sing together: I would suggest a Sinatra classic!

Turkmenistan aircraft have been coming here not infrequently this year. Most often we see one of two Bombardier Challenger jets registered as belonging to their government: yesterday, Sunday 13 November, it was the one registered as EZ-B023 which came here at 11am, then left again 80 minutes later. One can suppose that it came to drop off, or pick up, someone or something. Unsurprisingly, it has previously been photographed while here.

We do also see a larger Boeing 737 of Turkmenistan airlines, for which the registration is EZ-A007 (007: any connection with James Bond?). Since there is no regular service between Geneva and Turkmenistan, this aircraft never appears on the arrival/departure list (like very many other flights, especially from east of here!).

There is no obvious reason why the Challenger aircraft should have come here, especially on a Sunday. I have not found any reference to anything concerning Turkmenistan at the moment. However, one interesting fact, linking Turkmenistan with Switzerland, does exist. In July of this year, this paper carried a report that, like our own President, the President of Turkmenistan, in celebrating his 54th birthday, had sung on state television. So the reason for the flight is quite clear: the two presidents will be singing a televised duet together when Madame Calmy-Rey leaves office at the end of this year.

Could I suggest that they sing Sinatra's song "I did it my way"?

In case you have forgotten the words (the above utube link shows them), they start with

And now, the end is near,
And so I face the final curtain.
My friends, I'll say it clear;
I'll state my case of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full -
I've travelled each and every highway.
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.
